Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in downtown Tucson at a Title 1 K-8 school filled with rich history, diverse cultures, low socioeconomic-based families, and an influential group of vulnerable readers. Third grade is a pivotal year for students. Move On When Reading, MOWR, legislation in Arizona, calls for all students to pass a statewide assessment to move to the next grade level.

Teachers struggle to provide students with opportunities to think critically about the world and, at the same time, prepare students for state testing.

Kathy Short argues opportunities to think critically about the world are necessary for students to “understand their current lives and imagine beyond themselves” (2009, p. 7). But balancing test-taking strategies and foundational literacy skills with critical thinking opportunities has become increasingly difficult for teachers; thus, many students are uninspired to read.

In an attempt to infuse joy back into reading, third-grade students at my school were introduced to bilingual books as a means for celebrating language and the richness we all share through diverse experiences. The intent was not to value one speech over another but to celebrate language as a means for communicating universal stories and truths. The students loved this approach!

My Project

Third-grade students will share one of their favorite dual-language picture books with fourth graders. The books will have both familiar and unfamiliar languages. A third-grader will read one of the books with a fourth-grader and then explore one or more of the same engagements s/he used last semester. Then, with a peer, students can create cultural maps that depict diverse languages that surround them daily, decode an unfamiliar vocabulary such as insect language, or learn to write their names in a different language. After exploring commonalities in life experiences through diverse languages, each student will be presented with a copy of the book s/he explored to keep. In this way, third-grade students gain confidence in reading to peers, and all students take ownership of an exciting and engaging book.
