Creating Carp Kites Captures Fish and Imaginations

My Students
I teach 4th - 8th grade in San Diego. My students are creative and thoughtful. They come to our school because we use the arts to teach leadership. In addition to leadership skills, we purposefully infuse math, science, history, and language arts skills into our lessons.
My students genuinely care about the environment and relish the chance to take up an environmental cause.
I want to give them a voice to express those concerns.
They relish investigating the world around them. They have an especially keen interest in animals and their welfare.
My Project
Cross-curricular (math, science, and visual art) projects allow our students to experience real-world types of creative problem solving and thinking processes. My students thoroughly enjoy reading about animals and the environment, even more, they love to help animals and the environment. This project will have my students reading about a real-world problem that fish are encountering.
My students will have to work together to design a potential solution to their fish’s problem.
Your funding will allow our students to develop and complete their culminating fish unit project. My students will design realistic fish (the fish they have been studying) in muslin, carve fish scales on carving blocks, then print their iridescent scale designs onto the kite body with paint and ink pens.
Our culminating project will have students design Japanese Koinobori windsocks in the likeness of the fish species they have been studying. They will have to plan and measure fabric to the actual size of their fish species. Then they will work to design realistic fish scale patterns to carve then apply to the muslin fabric. Ultimately my students will use metallic paint and ink to apply scales to the fish body kites they designed. Once they have printed on their fabric, students will glue seams together, insert pipe cleaners to form their fish’s mouth and we will fly all of our fish in celebration!
