Creating Calm: Sensory Supplies for Students with Disabilities
Help me give my students the support they need to improve their self-regulation skills. The crash pads will be beneficial to our students. 99% of our students are diagnosed with autism and have difficulties with self-regulation.
The crash pads will be an essential tool for my students with disabilities, particularly those on the autism spectrum, to help them engage in sensory activities that promote regulation. These pads will provide a safe and soft space for students to engage in activities that allow them to release excess energy or engage in deep pressure input, which is crucial for their sensory needs. Students can jump, roll, or crash onto the pads, helping them to self-regulate and process sensory information in a controlled environment . This sensory activity encourages physical activity and improves body awareness, all while promoting relaxation and focus.
The crash pads will be specifically used to support sensory regulation skills, enabling students to better manage their sensory experiences throughout the day.
Many students with autism may experience sensory overload or need assistance with grounding and calming themselves. By using the crash pads during designated sensory breaks or as part of structured activities in occupational therapy sessions, students can develop essential coping strategies and self-regulation skills. This helps improve their emotional regulation, reduces anxiety, and creates an optimal learning environment where they can feel more focused, calm, and ready to engage in their academic work.
