This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a Title I school and are from diverse ethnic/cultural backgrounds, namely Bangladeshi, Chinese, Hispanic, and French. 95% of them are Latino and African America. The rest are sparsely mixed with other ethnicities. In my classroom, there are students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.
As a K/1 self-contained bridge class, many of my 1st graders are reading way below grade level and my kindergarteners are reading below the Pre-k level which is partly due to their strong Hispanic backgrounds.
In order to foster a love of reading, It is my hope that these comfortable seating will help to improve their reading levels by the end of June. The opportunity and achievement gaps are clearly apparent among our student population.
My Project
My students do not like to read during reading workshop because the classroom environment does not have comfortable seating areas where they can go off in their own space and lose themselves in a book.
In one of our Reading units, the students learned that Avid Readers read everywhere because of their love for books.
They really enjoy going off to read in different areas in the classroom but are sometimes uncomfortable sitting on the floor or the hard chairs.
These comfortable bean bags and floor seats will encourage a love reading by providing them with a comfortable reading space.
