My Students

"The unread story is not a story..." Ursula K. Le Guin. I want my students to create literary works they can be excited about sharing. In class, we will work through the entire process of writing a story, editing, illustrating and producing a final "published" copy of their work.

The students at my school are excited about learning and most of the parents have high expectations for their children.

However, the school is in a developing area of many young families. Our school has many dedicated teachers and PTA members but is without a strong sense of school loyalty from former students or community members. As we establish traditions of excellence, we are building the foundation for future students.

My Project

My students will begin this project by selecting a piece of their own writing and taking it through the process of self-editing as well as peer editing. The students will illustrate their stories and sketch a draft layout of their story before producing a final copy in the blank hard bound books I have requested. I want my students to know and understand what it feels like to take a piece of writing through the entire writing process including "publishing." I want my students to feel good about what they have created and have a final product they can be excited about sharing with others.

This project will help my students to be excited about the writing process and to have confidence in their ability to write.

I believe this project will also help my students to take a renewed interest in reading books produced by others as they will have a glimpse into what it takes to produce a publishable piece of writing. As my students age, I imagine their books will be a snapshot in time keepsake that they will treasure.
