My Students

Creativity is the impetus behind any given act of creation: inventions, compositions, etc. It is a fundamental human compulsion and largely related to notions of what separates human from machine intelligence. From Wikipedia

My K-5th grade Title I public school is in a rural area located a few miles from the beautiful coast of NC.

We serve many English as a Second Language students. As in most rural communities, jobs are scarce and money is tight. With state-wide district cuts, we must make the most of our supplies. My 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Academically Gifted students are very aware of their coastal surroundings and work towards keeping their community environmentally clean for the abundant wildlife and natural resources. My students appreciate beauty in nature and are always creating this natural beauty in their assignments and projects. They learn best when they can apply their creative skills to all aspects of their learning. My students recycle for the entire school every Tuesday. They are very aware that every little bit they do counts towards a better tomorrow for everyone.

My Project

My students need cardstock, laminating pouches, folders, foam, soft dice, 10 sided dice, steel rulers, chess, Tic Tac Toe, Monopoly, Chinese Checkers, and Backgammon games. I want my students to be creative in their learning. Supporting the arts means supporting creativity in learning. My students love to play games and draw and design. Our third nine week math project is to learn fractions and algebraic operations by playing and designing! Students will be designing their dream home with paper, rulers, folders, and the laminating supplies requested. They will also be learning math while learning the games of chess and backgammon. It requires a lot of creativity and number knowledge to play these games well. While they are designing their dream homes and learning the game of chess, my students will also be learning angles, fractions, percentage, and how to design a beautiful home.

They have an imagination that needs to have a creative outlet. My students need to experience all aspects of the Arts so that they can create and build whatever their passion dictates. We can not stifle creativity for the sake of knowledge, instead creativity will inspire knowledge that we cannot even begin to know.
