Creating an Inviting and Comfortable Reading Area...

My students need a fun and exciting area with such items as bean bag chairs and stuffed animals to read books.

My Students

My Kindergarteners come to school ready and eager to learn everyday. They come from various cultural and socio-economical backgrounds in the San Francisco Area. More than half of my student population come from low-income households.

All students are provided with free and reduced breakfast and lunch everyday.

Our school serves students in grades PreK-5 and provides great support from the community and teaching staff. We provide a safe learning environment for students to learn and thrive. We are a small and everyone knows each other. This really helps bring a nice culture within the school.

My Project

Reading is the process of making meaning from print. Kindergarteners are first introduced to reading through concepts of print such as books. Books are an important part in the development of basic reading skills. In my classroom, there is a library station set up in the corner of the room. As my Kindergarteners become better emergent readers, the library is one popular place to be! It is their favorite place to go to and read with their buddies (stuffed animals)! I would like to revamp it by adding a new carpet and some bean bags for comfortable seating. My students should feel relaxed and cozy when reading. Having storage bins would be beneficial in organize books by levels and genre. Providing more reading buddies (stuff animals) for the students to read to and with would make reading more inviting and lively. Our classroom library should continue to be a place where the students feel comfortable and excited to read all year long.

My students will benefit from this revamped library because they will be very enthusiastic to read more.

They will be eager to pick up more books because the library is a fun and inviting place to be. The library is also a station (center) during our Language Arts block. During this time, students are able to read books, sort books by front cover, back cover and title page and also find and count sight words in their books. They will continue to learn concepts of print throughout the year and the classroom library is a great place for them to brush up and practice these important skills. Reading should be fun and I believe a library filled with amazing books in a fun setting is where their imaginations will flourish and grow!
