Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a first year 3rd grade teacher who will be working at a Title I school. This project will assist me in stocking my very first classroom library with exciting and interesting books for my students. The students in my class will come from multicultural and multilingual backgrounds -- the majority from Latinx or AAPI communities. Almost half of students speak a language other than English at home and three fourths receive free or reduced-price lunch. I share these statistics to illustrate the amazing diversity of lived experiences that will be present in my classroom and highlight the importance of providing a wealth of multicultural texts.

All students deserve a literary environment where they see themselves reflected positively in the narrative.

However, providing such an environment is difficult. In 2018, there were more books published with animal protagonists than there were books published with Black, AAPI, Latinx and Native American protagonists combined. I am determined to cultivate a classroom library that celebrates the excellence and joy of all communities and have selected these books to be reflective of my students' lives and histories. The books are aligned with third grade content -- including poetry, biographies, US history, folktales, and SEL -- and some are bilingual in Spanish or Mandarin. Students will be able to select these books as independent reading texts. I will also use them during literacy instruction and during critical read alouds.

Thank you so much for any help you can give in creating an inspirational classroom library for my future students!
