Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are special education students with a myriad of disabilities. Some of these disabilities include specific learning disabilities, autism, emotional disturbance, fetal alcohol syndrome, intellectual disabilities and ADHD. Most of my students require social-emotional and academic supports in order to access the curriculum. They do not learn the way the general education students learn. They require many accommodations and resources to help them become successful.

These students are from a low income and culturally diverse city.

Our school is located in the city of San Leandro, California. My students are all performing below grade level, but I am optimistic that, with the right supports, they will be able to further their academic achievement and possibly perform at grade level. It is amazing to see these students tackle challenges with confidence and pride.

My Project

Some of the most important subjects for my students are reading, writing, and math. All of these skills are important for students to develop in order to have access to the general ed curriculum. In order to best help my students, I need to have access to curriculum-based material that is at or above their grade level. Another area of concern is their emotional state of mind when they arrive in class without being well-nourished. I would like to be able to provide them with snacks which will give them the energy to make it through the school day. I'm a believer that literature should be fun, therefore, learning games can help my students think critically while enjoying the learning process of learning. We need adaptive standing desks, snacks, extra reading and math workbooks, colorful pens and highlighters, water, sensory tools, folders, learning games, critical thinking games and other learning supplies.
