This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Will the classrooms be clean? How different does a high school classroom look compared to a middle school one? These are some of the questions students wrote on their end-of-the-year survey when I asked them what they were most nervous about for the next school year.
After a year and a half of remote learning during a time when many students dealt with incredible loss and hardships, my students are happy to return to the classroom this fall -- with a few reservations.
In order to combat these reservations and to support students' mental health, classroom engagement, community building, and creating a welcoming environment will be of paramount importance this fall.
My Project
For this project, I am requesting supplies such as comfortable work stools, organizers, picture frames, and displays to make students feel welcome upon returning to school this fall. After a year of learning at home, students are weary yet eager to return to the classroom, with many expressing worries about making friends and whether they will feel comfortable in class. To help students feel connected to school and to take ownership of our classroom, I'm asking for magnetic photo frames to display pictures I take of students at work (and play). When students see themselves pictured in the classroom, it creates a sense of belonging and helps quash uncertainties about belonging. The larger picture frames, for example, will be used to showcase student work. Throughout the year, I will add new pieces of work to the frames, highlighting students' efforts and successes. The stools will help students who need to move around an opportunity to get some movement while staying engaged in the lesson.
Our students have struggled so much this past year and a half and returning to school this fall will no doubt be filled with equal parts anxiety and excitement.
