Creating a Warm and Engaging Environment for Art and Reading

My Project

Kindergarten is often the first step in creating a lifelong-love of literature and learning. In our classroom, we value hands-on experiences and prioritize creating a warm and welcoming environment where every child feels included and comfortable to be themselves.

In our library space, we want children to be able to relax and enjoy the books and characters so many of us remember from our own childhoods; Madeleine, Franklin, Clifford, Eric Carle, and some newer faces like Elephant and Piggie and Pete the Cat.

In order to accomplish this goal, we hope to use the couch and floor seats to create a comfortable space for our students to get lost in an adventure of their choosing.

Hands-on activities are especially important in the learning process in kindergarten and throughout elementary school. Many of our students are English Language Learners and hands-on experiences are incredibly important to their learning. We hope to use the easels to enhance our art center so that students can paint, draw, and create to their hearts' content to reflect their learning of new letters, numbers, and concepts. The sensory table will be used to engage the children in the world around them, as well as expose them to new concepts we have discussed in our ELA lessons, which fits particularly well with our "Five Senses" unit in the beginning of the year.
