Creating a Student-Centered Classroom

The students in my classroom are creative, hard-working fourth and fifth graders.

They are excited, curious, and happy to be apart of our classroom family. Our move to flexible seating has been hugely successful in the last year. My current focus is on helping develop my students into lifelong readers by showing them that reading is a leisurely hobby, not just something they are forced to do inside school.

My Project

My classroom culture has been completely transformed by flexible seating! I want to add a few more seating options to create a reader's paradise in our classroom library. I am asking for three BONZY gaming chairs, 2 oversized saucer chairs, and a bean bag lounger to encourage students to settle in to our library and read! As an added bonus, all of the furniture can be folded to free up space when needed.

I feel passionately about helping to make my students lifelong readers, and a huge piece of that is showing them the joys of curling up with a good book.

This furniture will allow them to read in more of a comfy "real-world" environment to take away some of the "school" pressure associated with reading. Most adults, myself included, know how we do our best work. When I am working on a project or taking notes, I like to be in a chair with a writing surface in front of me. If I am reading or grading papers, I like to sit on the couch with my legs tucked under. It seems so obvious, but if we get to choose how we are most comfortable and productive in the "real world," why should the classroom be any different?

By giving students the power to choose how they are most comfortable while learning, I am not only helping increase their productivity, but empowering them to be problem-solvers in the future. I have been fortunate to make the shift to flexible seating within my classroom. I have noticed such a difference in the students! They are more focused during whole-class instruction and more productive during independent work time. I hope that by finishing off my classroom library area, I will be able to foster a lifelong love of reading, too!
