Creating a Space to Create Art

My students need light, easily maneuverable stools to help transform our computer lab into a space that also allows for the exploration of Art.

My Students

Art was one of my favorite subjects in school. Sadly, its role has been diminished in many elementary schools due to high-stakes testing, sometimes not being taught at all. My school is changing this, adding Art to our specialist rotation for all students.

My students attend a public school in a high-poverty area.

Over 80% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch, and over 30% of our students speak a language other than English in the home. Our truly diverse student body is comprised of students from all over the world. Because of the importance placed on standardized test scores, subjects like Art tend to get crammed in or not taught at all. My students are amazing artists and they deserve to express themselves and explore the world around them through Art.

My Project

I am requesting stackable, lightweight stools that can be used with all students in my elementary school. Currently, there is no room available that is available to be dedicated to Art, so I am requesting furniture that will fit in the tight space available in the computer lab. This will allow for the room to be used for Art and Technology, enabling both to be taught in the same day without disruption to my curriculum or to the classroom teachers' schedules.

Art allows for students to explore their world in ways not always offered in school and to express themselves, even if they are unable to find the words they need.

This is especially important when considering the large number of English Language Learners I teach, as well as my students with Autism.
