I teach at an urban elementary school in a low-income/high poverty school district. It is an exceptionally diverse student body- racially, culturally, and socio-economically. Many of our students speak languages other than English. The students at our school come to school with diverse backgrounds, cultures, languages, and families.
Our students love to learn!
Our school community embraces this diversity and honors all children. Despite a variety of challenges our students may face, one common thread among them is their complete excitement for learning and engaging in school activities. We are so fortunate to have a garden that allows all students to interact with nature on a daily basis. They love getting to explore the garden and have classes outside.
My Project
Currently our garden and recess yards are missing a key element, SHADE! Our students love going outside but are too hot. Teachers would use our outdoor space more if they knew that a safe shady place could be used for their students to enjoy the garden without melting in the sun. The materials I have requested will provide the fix needed to turn this space into an inviting additional outdoor learning space for our school.
My colleagues and I are excited at the prospect of having a protected outdoor space where our students can engage in gardening, art and physical movement activities.
The opportunities are endless...outdoor reading space? Yes. Shady resting spot? Yes. Morning meeting location? Yes. It will become a dream space realized.
