Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school serves students with disabilities from low income families. My class is a self-contained 6:1:1 elementary class that is comprised of 6 students living with autism. My students have educational, social-emotional, communication, and sensory needs.
Each of my students is extraordinary in their own way.
For this reason, we work our hardest to meet their needs and support them to reach their goals. Our students are learning math, science, social studies, and language arts through adapted lessons, teaching materials, and learning environment.
My Project
My students living with autism need a sensory area where they can go when they feel overwhelmed by the classroom environment or when they need specific sensory input. This sensory area will provide them with a safe space in the classroom to calm them down when they are agitated or become dysregulated. Students will be guided to this area when they begin displaying preliminary behaviors such as turning away from an adult, refusing to complete work or getting out of their seats.
The bean bags, noise cancelling headphones, and weighted blankets will give them the opportunity to receive the sensory stimulation they need to help them calm down and become regulated.
The rest of the soothing items will help students relax, and become aware of their emotions. The goal is to teach students to ask for a break when feeling upset, frustrated or dysregulated to calm down and then regroup. Teaching students strategies to cope with anxiety, frustrations and to self regulate are essential elements of becoming positive members of a community, and to enhance their quality of life.
