Creating a Sensory Oasis: Calm Corner for Student Well-Being
Help me give my students bean bags and sensory toys to create a calm corner that supports my students' mental health by providing them with a safe space to manage emotions, reduce stress, and refocus on learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
What I love most about my students is their resilience and their ability to thrive despite the many challenges they face. Each student in my classroom is unique, with different strengths and needs. They are bright, compassionate, and always striving to learn, but many of them struggle with emotional regulation and sensory overload. These challenges can make it difficult for them to focus in class and fully engage with their learning. That’s why I am creating a calm corner filled with resources designed to support their mental health.
The bean bags will provide a cozy, soft place for my students to retreat to when they feel overwhelmed, helping them to relax and reset.
These seating options offer them a safe space to take a break from classroom activities and process their emotions. The sensory toys—fidget items, textured objects, and manipulatives—will give my students the chance to calm themselves through tactile stimulation, which is key to helping them refocus and regain control during stressful moments.
My goal for this project is to create a space where my students can feel safe, calm, and supported emotionally. Having a calm corner with bean bags and sensory toys will give them the tools they need to manage their emotions, reduce stress, and return to learning with a clear mind. This space will not only improve their ability to focus but also contribute to their overall mental health and well-being.
My students are special because they show incredible determination and strength every day. They teach me so much about patience, perseverance, and empathy, and I want to provide them with every opportunity to succeed. The calm corner will be a crucial part of supporting their emotional growth, helping them to become more independent learners who can manage their feelings and stay engaged in their education.
