Creating a Sense of Calm With Bubble Floor Lamps

Help me give my students bubble floor lamps to help regulate their emotions and calm their bodies throughout the day.

My Students

I have seven students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, and group time to work on academic skills and writing. Students have storytime​ to work on comprehension, math, science, and art where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and follow picture directions. They work very hard and make so much progress throughout the year with academic, social, and communication skills.

My Project

We just got a bubble floor lamp with fake fish that go up and down from another project that was recently funded. I wasn't sure how the students would react to it and if it would be beneficial. After having it setup for a few days I can already tell how beneficial it is going to be.

Multiple students love looking at the bubbles, fish and lights on the floor lamp.

It is helping them to calm their bodies as they are learning how to regulate their emotions. My students are mostly nonverbal so they can't say how they are feeling and most do not know how to calm themselves down when they are upset. The floor light is very calming and because watching it is motiving for them it will definitely help some students to calm down when they have a lot of energy or get upset.

Having two more lamps will allow more students to be able to look at and sit by the lamps so we can keep everyone spread out. I try to have several calming decorations and items throughout the room to provide opportunities for students to calm down and also to help prevent too much overstimulation. These floor lamps will be a great addition to the one we already have and the other calming tools we have already been using.
