My Students

I teach 4th grade at a low-income school. I believe that students should be learning a rigorous curriculum while applying their learning to the real-world. By the end of the year, I want my students to well-equipped with knowledge and experience to put them on the path to being a productive citizen.

In our school we have students from all walks of life, but many of our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

My students are eager to learn about history, reading, writing, math, and science. They love learning hands-on and engaging in exciting, unique projects. Our school strives to make all children feel engaged and loved. We want each child to be nurtured into becoming the best person they can be.

My Project

We have so many learning objectives that can be taught through real-world experience! What better way to engage a class than by creating a real, functioning business, like a school store? Cash registers will allow students to engage in the entrepreneurial process. Students will hone financial literacy skills. They will learn about making change, profits and losses, inventory, budgets, and so much more. Running a school store ties into the content areas of Social Studies (personal and entrepreneurial finance), Writing and Art (advertising), and Math (money).

No more boring textbook lessons or droning videos about Economics!

Students will be real business stakeholders while working and running a school store. We will have sales clerks and advertising reps, and everyone will help in making decisions for the store. Aside from academic benefits, running a school store will promote many 21st century skills such as: communication and collaboration, teamwork, creativity, productivity and accountability, digital citizenship, responsibility, and leadership.
