Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

With this being my first year in my own classroom, I have had a lot of work to do when it comes to creating an environment that best supports not only my students, but also myself as an educator. Teaching intervention in a middle school requires a lot of time and patience on both ends, and my goal is to create a space that my students enjoy learning in and that they can turn to when they need a peaceful space to take a break.

By incorporating resources in the classroom that revolve around mindfulness, it can provide students the tools needed to come back to the present moment and be fully engaged, ready to learn.

For example, having a comfortable rug, along with meditation cushions on the floor offers a place to sit when grounding is needed. The mental health and emotional regulation posters share information and affirmations that can be used depending on what kind of support they are looking for at that moment. Light up Buddha provides a visual for breathing practices to help with anxiety and stress, as well as the weighted 5lb stuffy that can be used when a little bit of extra pressure is needed to help with fidgeting or worry. Alternative lighting also proves to be beneficial when the overhead lights are too bright or overstimulating, and a bookshelf helps to create that barrier for the calming corner.

Working intervention has taught me that all students have different needs, and my goal is to provide each individual the support they require in order to be able to show up as the best version of themselves.

Above all, if there is one thing that I have learned while working with middle schoolers, it's that they are ALWAYS hungry, making snacks an essential.
