My Students

The classroom environment is a "critical variable in affecting student morale and learning". Mark Phillips captures well my feelings about my classroom. As students enter the room, they should immediately relax in a bright, warm and inviting environment that enhances their learning experiences.

My school is a new school which which encourages science and the arts in a meaningful and dynamic way.

As such, our school promotes a global studies curriculum, one that encourages an inquiry based approach to learning. Beginning this year we will also be combining the IB approach to our teaching and learning process. This year, I will be teaching a class of fourth and fifth grade special needs students. I am familiar with the needs of all these students having taught them at some point in previous years. Most of my students are diagnosed as learning disabled or speech impaired while three of them have other health impairments. What is remarkable about my students is their willingness to learn given the right motivation and supports. They enjoy when you sit with them and give them one on one attention but are equally happy when they can complete an activity as part of a supervised group. Even those students who have sensory or motor issues participate well in the learning process.

My Project

Students are seated on the carpet for morning meeting. The carpet is attractive and engaging. The bean bag chairs add excitement and beauty. Two students, one a tactile, the other a visual learner are allowed to change the dates on the super pocket calendar chart. As we switch to the read aloud, students look at the carpet and talk among themselves about the information seen there. Once the reading has begun, students are focused. They use their clip pads to jot down responses to questions on their activity sheets. They share their responses with a partner then with a whole group. An assignment is given to each group. Students take a moment to lull on the carpet before taking their plastic magazine organizers containing their writing folders back to their seats to begin the assignment. Students have have pasted pictures on their organizers to help enhance the room more. There is discussion at the desks for those working in groups and one on one assistance from paras. All are happy! We need a rug, bean bag chairs, magazine organizers and a pocket chart.

Students work best when they are relaxed and are in an inviting atmosphere.

The donations that I receive will greatly the room's ambiance, and the students' learning experiences. My students will feel special, not in the way they are normally labeled, but as extraordinary students who can achieve amazing things. They will be so comfortable in the room, as they engage in an independent reader lounging on a bean bag chair, or relaxing on the carpet that they will be eager to return the next day.
