This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Each year, as I learn more about what my 7th and 8th grade students need, I repeat the old adage that all teachers are reading teachers. Although I teach math, many of the story problems at this grade level expect my students to have a level of comprehension and savviness that they aren't yet equipped with. In an effort to build their reasoning skills and develop their reading comprehension, I am planning for several literacy-based units of instruction to support their learning of grade-level math content. All of that is fancy teacher speak to say that I want my students to learn math through more stories!

My students need more options for texts to develop their reading comprehension alongside their math reasoning.

This previous year, my classes read Sir Cumference and the First Round Table and Sir Cumference and the Sword in the Cone. After my students finished our last unit of math, I had them create their own storybooks that were bilingual, illustrated, and all about solving grade-level math problems. I noticed, however, that many of my students needed more examples of what a math-based storybook looks like. I hope to add more reading into my classroom to engage students across content areas and to synthesize their learning between two disciplines!
