Creating a Library Maker Space

My students need Lego and Kinetics kits to develop engineering challenges. The Lego boards will be used as a place to create their projects.

My Students

It's time...time to start our Library Maker Space. Since we are transitioning from a Junior High (7-9) to a Middle School (6-8), I thought this would be a good time to fulfill a dream I've had of creating a Maker Space in our library media center.

In the fall of 2016, we will become a middle school.

This is an exciting endeavor for our small community. We have 3 Junior Highs and we will be the first to make the transition. We have applied to authorize as an International Baccalaureate school and are in this process as well. Our school serves approximately 750 students each day. Many of those students come from low income homes and struggle to come up with the resources meet their educational needs. They are an amazing group of students who are excited about new ideas and projects. I'm hoping to fan the flame of that enthusiasm by providing Legos and Kinetics and creating a space where they can experiment, build and CREATE!

My Project

I would like to create an area of Legos, Lego boards and Kinetics kits to develop engineering challenges. These materials, as well as others purchased by the building will be used to create a Maker Space. Students will be able to use the materials during our daily Cedar Time, before and after school as well as during their lunch periods. The point of the Maker Space is for students to CREATE, CREATE, CREATE...using any materials we have available to them. They will work collaboratively to problem solve monthly design challenges. For these challenges they will use trial and error, research and redesign to solve a problem. They will also have 'free design' time to just explore the materials available to them.

These materials will help to build a space where students can use scientific method in a way to create something new and innovative.

What a wonderful way to motivate students to problem solve, work with others and have fun doing it!
