My Students

My students love to read and are making progress. However, they need books to read at home to strengthen their skills. Many are English Language Learners and can't get enough books to read. They can't afford to purchase books to read at home and I want them to have their own home library.

I teach second grade in an urban area where parents are struggling to make ends meet.

We have recent immigrants from many countries (Somalia, Burma, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Egypt, Togo, Mexico, Jamaica, St. Lucia, etc.). The need is great for materials to supplement our reading program. I would love to have my students have books to read at home. Our suburban neighbors purchase many books for their children and I would like our students to have the same opportunities. Book ownership will increase self-confidence and these books can be read to younger brothers and sisters to give them a ‘step-up’ in literacy. I would like books that will challenge my more able readers and be level-appropriate for all of my students. You will make such a difference in our students' lives. We stress everyday that our students do their best. With the proper challenging books, students can practice their reading strategies and skills. Our students can be the bright lights of the future.

My Project

Most of my students, although making excellent progress, are below grade level. They need quality books to help strengthen their skills. My beginner learners need books on and slightly above their level to help them strengthen and increase their reading skills. My advanced group needs challenging books to keep them motivated. I am requesting sets of books my children enjoy such as The Little Bear books, The Cat in the Hat, Clifford the Red Dog books and The Magic Treehouse books. My students will love receiving these books!

I have received generous book donations in the past and my students have made excellent progress.

I would like to continue this tradition with my current group of second graders. Believe me, you will make such a difference in their lives. I wish you could be here when they receive their books to see their joyful faces!
