Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are curious, bright, and full of personality. Every day, they walk into our classroom with unique stories, challenges, and gifts — and I want them to walk into a space that reflects that. My goal is to create a classroom library that’s not just a shelf of books, but a place that feels inviting, joyful, and built just for them.
With this project, I’m transforming our classroom library into a cozy, student-centered reading space.
The books I’ve selected — like The Hunger Games, Bridge to Terabithia, and Holes — are high-interest, thought-provoking titles that will captivate my readers and spark classroom discussions. For many of my students, these books will be their first meaningful reading experiences — and I want those experiences to stick.
To help make reading feel special and safe, I’ve included beanbag chairs, stools, a large classroom rug, and soft lighting. These pieces will help me create multiple flexible seating options, so students can relax into their books and find focus in a space that meets their needs. I’ve also added book baskets for easy organization and a lamp to set a calm, welcoming tone during independent reading time.
Bookmarks, scratch-and-sniff incentives, and finger lights will add fun touches that motivate even my most reluctant readers. The little things — like giving students a choice of bookmark, or the chance to read with a tiny flashlight — often have the biggest impact.
I believe my students deserve a reading space that reflects the excitement and potential I see in them every day.
