My Students

I ask my students to think critically about the world around them every single day. Stress and anxiety lead to less critical thought. Comfortable seating helps decrease anxiety! Last year I submitted a project for a bean bag chair, and the students loved it! I want to add two more to my class!

Students at our school attend often while facing critical challenges at home and in the community.

Many students attend because of the inspiration and challenge provided in our classrooms, as well as the relationships that we are able to build. Increasing technology opens new doors every day. Students at this urban school in Missouri are driven to succeed. When placed in a challenging, tech-savvy classroom, they have shown the ability and drive to create projects that are both interesting and helpful to the community which our school serves. Students have been through challenges themselves, and many have a great desire to give back to the community by conducting projects that are real and meaningful. Unfortunately, a lack of access to technology makes it more difficult to plan and carry out these projects. Not impossible, mind you. We're still doing amazing things every day, just with a bit more difficulty sometimes.

My Project

This project is for two bean-bag chairs. Research has shown that alternative seating helps increase student focus and learning in the classroom (Merritt, 2014). These chairs will allow students who need sensory sensory help to have a different place to sit and learn. My students absolutely loved their first bean bag chair - it is used daily. I'm in need of another two chairs for students to use! The other part of the project will help me replenish class sets of markers and colored pencils that will help students unleash their creativity in my class! We now spend a lot of time on technology, but students still love the ability to draw and think with markers and colored pencils.

A donation to this project is a donation to support student creativity and problem-solving skills.

My method of teaching aims to provide students with all the resources they need and push them to find the solutions to their own problems. This is how the professional world looks and this is what they must be prepared to achieve. Your donation will especially help those students who often find school to be a constricting, restless place!
