Our students live on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in Oglala Lakota County, one of the poorest counties in the United States. I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to work with these amazing students. Unfortunately these students also face many challenges one could imagine. The students have limited access to technology beyond the school walls. Within the school we only have two computer labs of twenty computers in each lab to service five hundred plus students. My students and I belong to one of the greatest tribes in America, we belong to the Oglala Lakota Nation also known as Sioux Indians. We have a very rich culture and history of defending our homelands include the Battle of the Little Bighorn some of our warriors included Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, Little Wound, American Horse, just to name a few.
My Project
In order to enable our students to meet their fullest potential and in turn improve their prospects for the future and the entire Oglala Lakota Nation, improving educational opportunities is essential. My students are as eager, curious, and intelligent as one could hope for. Unfortunately there are many obstacles these students face. Technology is a vehicle for our students to pursue their educational aspirations. I would like to implement more math and computer science in my classroom to allow my students to be better prepared for the rapidly changing world.
I need these Kindle Fire tablets to allow my students to access the greater world, our remote location hinders that ability.
We currently are limited in regard to technology. Through your donation, this technology not only can we have access to the wider world, the wider world will have access to Pine Ridge School. We have many students that are interested in math, science and technology. I would like to implement computer science and math to my students on a daily basis. My students would benefit from having these tablets in their classroom. I hope to have STEM based small group activities available to them and having these tablets will make all these activities possible. I would like our Lakota students to become critical thinkers and have stronger problem solving skills to help them beyond high school. We want to provide collaboration, problem solving and critical thinking skills in our Lakota children.
