My Project

Middle school is a tricky yet important time for young readers. They need to build their reading skills, but they'd much rather watch a movie than read a book. Research has shown that the best way to improve students' reading skills is to have them read as much as possible. We know our students don't always read outside of class, so we try to give them lots of reading time during humanities class. Still, there are always a few kids who will resist during independent reading.

One way we motivate reluctant readers is by giving them the chance to choose a fun, cozy area to curl up in during independent reading.

We had great success with creating a reading nook with a carpet and some beanbags in part of our room. Students loved being able to sprawl out on the carpet and read. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough room in the reading nook to fit 25 sixth graders. We'd love to create a second reading space in another area of the room. We have the space, but we'd need another carpet. That's where you come in.

Building reading skills is crucial for our sixth graders. Developing good reading habits and learning to read for pleasure are two of our top goals for our students. If we can connect them with the right book and motivate them to read it, we are well on our way to unlocking all of the benefits of strong literacy skills. We've got the books.
