This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I love my classroom of third grade readers. Each one brings energy and enthusiasm to our class that makes for a very positive learning environment. These third graders need access to quality literature that is of high interest to them. Due to the pandemic, many of our student’s literacy foundation was severely affected from having to attend part of kindergarten and first grade online. The result is that the range of ability levels for reading in my classroom ranges from kindergarten to fifth grade.

These book sets will effectively differentiate for the students at grade level and appropriately challenge the ones approaching grade level by having leveled guided reading groups that will help strengthen their literacy skills.

Having a book set for 4-5 students will enable them to gain some independence with their reading and working with me 1-2 times per week in a small group to practice reading comprehension and higher thinking skills. Small groups of students reading a book together not only fosters independence but will also allow me time to work with other groups of below grade level students who need support accessing grade level curriculum and strengthening their fluency and comprehension skills while more advanced readers are actively engaged with reading.

The composition books will serve as interactive reading journals that will be an ongoing conversation between my students and myself and the storage boxes will allow students to keep their own set of books from our classroom library and will give them instant access to reading books rather than having to spend time looking through their desks each time they want to read a book.
