Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a wide variety of economic backgrounds which makes for a very diverse group of kids. Our school also has a really great Special Education program, which creates even more diversity in our classrooms. Because these students have come up in such different ways and experienced so many different things, we learn a lot from each other. We learn what hard work and perseverance can do. We learn to be compassionate and to love one another despite our differences. We learn that together, we can achieve so much more.
Each individual student brings something special to our classroom and together we make sure that each and every one of us is able to succeed.
My students learn very quickly that the word "fair" does not mean that everybody receives exactly the same thing, but rather that everybody receives exactly what he/she needs to be successful.
My Project
Creating an environment that is motivating and fun has an extreme effect on student learning. I have always been a strong advocate for allowing students to move around the room to work during different times throughout the day before flexible seating was a "thing." I became accustomed to using what I had already in the classroom or could find from home to create new and comfortable options for different learning spaces. It is my hope to provide my students with enough options that every single student can choose a learning space that allows them work to their full potential and for most young students, a desk and a chair is not that.
By giving students a comfortable place to work and learn, their attention spans improve, which leads to higher achievement.
Students also become more actively engaged in classroom activities and are able to become more aware of their own learning process. This is a life skill that they will be able to take with them for years to come to aid in their successes. Students also become more independent as learners and are more motivated to come to school and learn.
Students who have sensory issues, have ADHD, autism or other special needs also benefit greatly by having a place to work that is conducive to his/her specific needs. Kore Wobble Stools and stability balls promote slight movements while the students sit while improving posture and sensory input while learning. The air cushions and reading pillows are more versatile and can easily be moved around the classroom and provide different textures to support specific needs. Stools also promote better posture and can easily be moved. Each of these alternative seating options I have chosen to integrate into my classroom can provide support for students who have many different needs.
