Creating a Clutter-Free Classroom Cafe

My students need bins to organize their materials and work efficiently as they learn to work in a stimulating 'desk-free' environment.

My Students

My incredible 5th grade scholars are on their way to changing the world.

They are inspired and inspiring.

I have never known a more intelligent and creative group of children in my life. Here at our little school, we are doing BIG things. Our focus is on Science, Math, and Technology, and my students are definitely embracing this philosophy. In fact, they are better scientists, mathematicians, and "techies" than I am or will ever be. Amazing things are also being done around engineering, robotics, project-based learning, art, dance, and writers workshop. Our wonderfully diverse classroom is truly a reflection of the multiculturally rich community in which we live, and the high level of acceptance, celebration of differences, deep understanding of citizenship, and profound global awareness which exist at our school is truly life-changing. I am honored to be learning with this miraculous group of individuals.

My Project

This project is the next phase of my creation of a Classroom Cafe. The goal of this Cafe is to provide my students with the skills to be effective 21st century innovators and collaborators. Unfortunately, traditional classrooms have not provided learning spaces which allow for this creativity and collaboration.

Mirroring the unique working spaces of today's leading innovators, collaborators, creators, engineers, and entrepreneurs, a comfortable, inviting classroom with flexible seating options will give my students a more authentic, real-world environment in which to thrive and grow.

In the first phase of my Classroom Cafe, donations were able to purchase a couch, rug, coffee table, lamps, and end tables. These items have added the unexpected elements of fun, warmth, and "homeyness" to our room - traits which are sadly lacking in today's standard classrooms. However, that was only the beginning of our classroom transformation.

Since my students do not have traditional desks, it is imperative that classroom organization be as efficient and accessible as possible. To achieve this, all supplies and materials will be shared. Books, notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, etc. will be stored around the room on bookcases.

This is where the bins come in. However, they will not only serve as organizers. Because of their beautiful, vibrant colors, they will also add to the overall joyous and warm aesthetic of our Classroom Cafe.

To see the bright smiles on my students' faces when they enter a room which is welcoming and inviting rather than sparse and cold will be the greatest reward. However, the larger goal of our Classroom Cafe will last a lifetime.
