My Students

Our school is a hidden gem. We like to call it “the best school in the universe!” Our students live up to our motto daily; they love to work hard and show how they are “the best students in the universe!” For the 2020-2021 school year, I am hopeful that I will be given the opportunity to move up to 2nd grade with my previous cohort of 1st grade students. We, as a classroom family, are very excited for this potential transition! My students and their families are a very tight-knit bunch who often spend their evenings and weekends together celebrating birthdays and playing sports. My class is composed of two Filipino students, five Latinx students, one Hispanic student, and thirteen Black students.

My students and their families bring a lot of diversity and different experiences to our classroom.

The kiddos are extremely loving, curious, creative, and full of questions (as are most 6 and 7 year olds)! They enjoy diving into discussions and sharing their opinions with their peers. They truly are an incredible group, and I look forward to hopefully being able to spend another year learning and growing with them.

My Project

In order to expose my students to authors and characters of color and different cultures, I have created a “wish list” of picture books.

Reading books that are representative of my students’ races and cultures will not only allow my students to feel seen, valued, and empowered, but also it will allow students to gain insight into other races, our collective histories, and inequalities.

Reading these picture books will spark dialogue and open up a safe space for my students to ask challenging questions.

My students’ favorite time of the day is “enrichment” when they sit on our large, blue carpet and relax while I read aloud a story. After we read a story, my students love to share their opinions and discuss the content of the books they listened to. Any contribution to our classroom library will assist us as we embark on this journey into being race-conscious community members.
