My Project
Completing LETRS training opened my eyes to the idea of Scarborough's Reading Rope and how a student must develop skills in different strands of the rope of literacy to become a proficient reader. This inspired me to look into the methods of providing opportunities to develop those skills. It turns out, a child-centered classroom with targeted, hands-on opportunities to engage learning, can help develop the whole child along with fostering reading proficiency. This project requests math and reading manipulatives to help create that learning space.
My students are builders, writers, artists, and problem-solvers.
They love to work with their hands and move their bodies. They do not care for a workbook or a worksheet with pre-prescribed learning. They want choice and challenge. The items requested in this project will give my classroom a start to becoming a truly child-centered learning arena, and allow me to become a guide to my students rather than a dictator.
