Creating a Calming Environment

My Students

I teach a diverse group of students who strive to succeed. They have varying social, emotional, and academic needs that challenge them every day and we work to meet and support these needs. A goal of my classroom and program is to support students in learning the skills they need to regulate their emotions and make progress in their academics so they can begin integrating into inclusion classrooms with their same aged peers. Supporting these students to learn what they need to succeed and then to watch them find that success is what inspires me to find new ways to challenge them and to help them succeed. They are an incredible group of students that I love teaching ever day!

My Project

Helping to meet the students needs is a key support we strive for in the classroom. Pillows and a nice rug would be a great starting point!

I would like to create a warm and inviting Calm Corner in my classroom where the students can go to regulate when they are having a difficult time managing their emotions.

When students are experiencing high levels of emotion, they may struggle to learn new information or perform academic tasks. When they have somewhere to go and work through their emotions they are more likely to return to their tasks and activities and benefit from their time in school!
