Creating a Calm-Down Corner for Big Feelings and Little Learners
Help me give my students materials to create a calm-down corner—a safe, quiet, and welcoming space where students can go to practice self-regulation, regain composure, and return to learning with confidence.
My first-grade students are curious, creative, and full of big feelings. As young learners, they're still developing the emotional vocabulary and self-regulation strategies they need to navigate friendships, classroom expectations, and daily challenges. Many of my students face stressors outside of school that affect their ability to manage emotions during learning time. With these Solobo toys, Play-Doh, and other resources, students will have a designated space to learn how to identify and manage their feelings, reflect quietly, and build the self-awareness they need to thrive academically and socially. Having a calm-down area teaches children that emotions are okay and manageable. It supports trauma-informed teaching practices and creates a more inclusive classroom where all students feel safe and valued. By integrating social-emotional learning into our daily routine, I’m helping my students become more resilient, empathetic, and ready to learn.
