My Project

We all know that the COVID-19 pandemic changed all of our lives greatly, but we might not realize that the impact of the shutdowns and isolation are still showing their effects on my 6th graders. These children were just starting school and learning how to be students when everything shutdown, and as a result they need a massive increase in support in order to help them grow and mature as students.

I know that my students need extra support due to the effects of the pandemic, and these requested resources can help challenge, support, and facilitate growth for my 6th grade students.

The podiums being requested are to help students feel better supported as they public speak: it can help boost their confidence, give them something to hold onto as they feel anxious, and just help them get the full debate experience as we complete our argumentative unit. Books have been more important to my students this year than ever before. They are constantly borrowing books from my class library, reading during class, and challenging each other to competitions. I always hope to offer my students the best resources, and books are key to helping students grow further. I also selected books in particular that would speak to my students and help them feel heard since they feature topics such as Hawaiian myths and experiences, growing through teenage life, dealing with stress and other dark thoughts, and a mix of topics based on their interests that will get them excited to read. The packs of prizes being requested are also to help encourage those who may need a little extrinsic motivation to read a bit more. The kids love and respond well to a little prize.
