My Students
Imagine life as a learning-challenged student struggling to take notes in class. Imagine trying to follow the words on the board but to no avail. Imagine trying to write the key points of the lesson but always failing to understand them. Imagine feeling like a complete failure.
This is the life of many of the almost 600 students at our South Bronx school.
They are inner-city high school students living in one of our nation's toughest neighborhoods. Most of them hope to be the first person to graduate from high school in the family and hopefully attend and finish college. Nearly one hundred percent of them live below the poverty level. The overwhelming majority come from broken homes, foster care, or group homes.
My students do not have the basic school supplies, let alone the technology they need to learn and succeed in the 21st Century. As their teacher and college advisor, my job is to help our most learning-challenged and disadvantaged students work through their difficult lives and discover a path to high school graduation, college, and life-long success.
My Project
Your donation will enable me to purchase a Mimio Xi Interactive Whiteboard System for my classroom. This new technology will engage my students in an environment where they can obtain the self-confidence to freely express their ideas and feelings regarding the world around them as they learn important social and life skills that prepare them to graduate from high school and go to college.
They will learn how to use technology to help them compensate for their learning challenges. They will learn cooperation, teamwork, and public speaking skills as they complete group projects. Learning-challenged students will learn alongside general education students using a color-coding system with notes and Mimio accessibility options. This will allow my most struggling and at-risk students to fully participate in counseling sessions and classroom activities.
Your generosity will help our students to use technology and media to overcome obstacles, compensate for their learning challenges, succeed in school, and apply to college.
You will give them the tools they require to excel in classes and earn higher grades, which will give them a greater chance of getting into and graduating from college. You will give them a 21st Century classroom that will prepare them for the challenges they will face in the 21st Century world.
