My Students
My high school students are curious, insightful learners, who want to understand the world around them and to make an impact on their communities. Many of them are active presences in their neighborhoods, volunteering and engaging in service projects to improve the lives of their friends, families, and neighbors.
Most of the students in my class are immigrants or the children of immigrants, and they are deeply committed to their education.
As English language learners, it's critical that they have access to plenty of interesting books at a wide variety of reading levels.
My Project
Many of my students do not have exposure to any kind of reading material on a regular basis, let alone great young adult novels. In my English class, I try to combat that literacy gap by surrounding my students with shelves and shelves of wonderful books. Over the years, though, some well-loved novels have fallen apart or disappeared with students who couldn't let go of them.
I need to replenish my classroom library with high-interest titles that will captivate a new class of would-be readers.
Matching students with the right books can truly change their lives. Avid reading leads to greater reading ability, higher grades, and college as a real option...not to mention teenagers who grow up to be curious, active, informed citizens.
Please help my students become lifelong readers by bringing books to our classroom that they will be lining up to borrow. When the right book makes it into the right hands, you will have made an enormous difference in that student's life.
