Create, Compose, Correct: Writing and Revising With Collaborative Composition

Help me give my students unlimited opportunities to collaborate on the writing process with vision and revision, to brainstorm ideas, to create drafts, to revise ideas, and to share their progress as writers.

My Project

I have requested a set of large whiteboards along with whiteboard markers and erasers to provide my students with unlimited opportunities to create and compose sentences and paragraphs. Using whiteboards to practice brainstorming ideas and composing essays, students will have the chance to work together as collective writing partners or as individuals to invent and create writing pieces that can then be revised with feedback in the moment.

My goals for this project are to give students chances to respond to prompts and/or compose original essays and to practice the necessary invention, drafting and revising skills while not feeling the burden to create final drafts on paper for submission.

While many essays will end up being word processed, whiteboard collaborative composition underscores the value of critical thinking skills in the composition process. Giving students chances to experiment with writing strategies on whiteboards allows them to try new techniques and get timely corrective and encouraging feedback which can then help them revise their writing with ease.

My students are special because I teach all one grade level (11th grade), but I teach all levels of 11th grade students including a reading intervention class, two classes of typical 11th grade English students, and two sections of Advanced Placement English Language and Composition. All of these students would benefit greatly and would improve their writing by having numerous chances to collaborate, draft, and revise pieces of writing on large whiteboards that can be used by partners or small groups with greater ease than working with individual papers.

I am excited to take collaborative composition to the next level in my classroom with a set of student whiteboards, markers, and erasers that will make it possible for this strategy to become a routine practice at all levels in my classes.
