Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Too often classroom instruction has become monotonous, regimented, and BORING!! My goal this year is to ignite creativity and critical thinking all of our lessons, assignments, and activities. I want my students to feel 5th grade is relevant-to do this, we will collaborate, communicate, and connect.

I teach a dynamic group of 5th graders who come to school each day to build a better future for themselves.

Over 90% of the students in our Title I school receive free or reduced-price lunch, and over 25% of them are English language learners. Our school strives to have a "No Excuses" attitude when it comes to preparing our students for successful futures. We utilize technology throughout instruction, and incorporate character education and college readiness in all we do. My students are destined for success, and I will do whatever it takes to prepare them for that!

My Project

Imagine if students could create a movie as a culminating activity for our next unit! The excitement and enthusiasm for that type of project will be overwhelming! Students will collaborate in groups to plan their movies. They will need to determine roles, write their script, film, and edit before being able to share their work not only with the class, but the greater community. Imagine stop action videos being created to explain the latest concept or skill we have learned. Students will collaboratively plan out their videos. Using these Legos, clay, and other art materials they will stage each frame to communicate their vision. Imagine students being able to liven up their writing and share it with readers around the world. Imagine iPads allowing us to bring a new level of creativity and excitement to our learning. They can facilitate these types of collaborative, creative projects, and make it easy to share our work with the world! Imagine the possibilities!

I currently have one iPad for my 34 students!

Having these additional iPads in my classroom will allow more collaborative groups to create and share a variety of projects. As students have more opportunities to think critically, collaborate with their peers, and communicate with the school and greater community all while using different forms of technology for different purposes, they will be more prepared for successful futures.
