My Students
I teach first grade at an elementary school in Northeast Philadelphia. My students enter the classroom each day excited to learn how to read, write, speak and listen. They each have a heart of gold paired with motivation and determination to be the best that they can be.
Our school population is more than 60% economically disadvantaged and 10% English language learners.
Our students come from all over the world including China, Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh and of course, Philadelphia. Our school provides a nurturing environment for students, staff, and families to enrich them academically and grow as positive social contributors in our world. Our parents are extremely supportive and involved in their child's education. Our parents and students aspire to succeed and achieve their goal of living the American Dream. Due to the financial crisis, all of our educational supplies, resources, and materials are either limited or non-existent. Many teachers spend much of their own paychecks each year to be sure that they, along with their students, have everything that they need to succeed!
My Project
The expectations of my 6 and 7 year olds are pretty intense. This includes being seated and still for longer periods of time than what most of us were used to going to school as children.
I want to give my students who struggle to keep their focus and attention the opportunity for true active learning.
This type of seating is proven to help those who can focus best through movement.
Quite a few of my students would really benefit from having Runtz Ball Chair seating in the classroom. This would motivate, engage and increase their love of learning through stimulation of the brain which in turn will increase their ability to focus and pay attention.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
