My Students

We have some of the most creative, artistic, and inspiring students around. Our students live on the Lower East Side but have roots from around the world—China, Bangladesh, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic—just to name a few. We are an exciting bunch! Many of our students are working on learning a second language. Our school has a dual language program for Mandarin and Spanish. The diversity in our students makes for an exciting learning environment for all, especially in the art room.

My admiration for my students has increased during this pandemic.

When school abruptly moved to remote learning in March, my students remained eager to learn about art in spite of the obstacles they faced. A vast majority of my students live in the areas in NYC that have been heavily impacted by COVID-19. My students continued to find purpose and meaning in their art-making when life around them was not easy. My students and their families remind me daily how important it is to look for beauty and joy even during times of difficulty. They are true artists and heroes.

My Project

As my school community and I plan for the start of the school year, we are thinking of the idea of school in new ways. We are preparing for remote learning blended with classroom instruction with small groups. I am preparing instruction that can take place at home and in school. A big part of my planning is ensuring that my students will have supplies that they can use both in school or at home.

I want to support my students by creating art kits that can be used in school or at home.

Unlike previous years, the supplies must be for individual use. The art supplies that your donation will purchase will allow my students to not only develop their artistic abilities and knowledge but will also help them cope with learning through a pandemic. With their own art supplies, my students will have a safe space where they can express their feelings, create, imagine, and have fun.

We are a Title I school. Many of my students' families have endured financial hardship due to COVID-19. As a result, purchasing art supplies for this school year may not be a possibility for many. Your donation will be greatly appreciated. I know my students and their families will value your generosity. Thank you!

“Right now, art is essential. Science is going to get us out of this—but art is going to get us THROUGH this.” --Mo Willems.
