Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing 7th graders who are at very unique times in their life. Our school is a Title I school with the majority of our students coming from low-income households. However, this does not hold them back! My students absolutely love science and are more than willing to get their hands dirty as they explore the wonders of science.
My Project
Every year, I assign my students the task of creating their own scientific board game. Students are given the following rules: 1. Students must create a unique game and 2. It must demonstrate that you understand the content (for example, the rules of the periodic table).
Students are then free to use their imagination!
Every year I am BLOWN AWAY by the dedication, creativity, content knowledge, and effort put into these boards. The learning demonstrated in this project has exceeded any data I could gather from the "traditional" way of assessing students.
After projects are turned in, we always host a Game Night for friends and families to come to play our board games! Students stand next to their games for the first 30 minutes and explain what they gathered from this project and describe how they made their game unique. This has been one of the most successful nights of the year in terms of parent involvement.
The materials I have requested are vital in the creation of these boards as they offer the basic structure of the project. The blank boards will allow students a canvas on which to create and the spinners and dice will allow a "moving" system. Paint, clay, and construction paper will give students the materials needed to create cards, game pieces, and tiles for their boards. They then use their brainpower to construct their creation!
