This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach physics at an urban high school in which we struggle with finding ways to get hands-on experiences with scientific learning and experimentation. We don't have a science lab, but we manage to make do with limited means.

At our school seventy-five percent of our students get free or reduced lunch, meaning they come from homes that are at or below poverty level.

There are 116 different languages spoken at our school. I teach physics to honors students, college preparatory students, and English Language Learners.

Our normal physics curriculum covered only forces and motion. I have started a Physics 2 course that would teach our students about electricity and magnetism, sound and light waves, and more about today's careers in science and technology. These urban students are bright and ready to learn, but the school is sorely lacking the materials that will bring the curriculum to life. I want to grab their attention and have them ask real questions about how the world works.

My Project

The new project-based physics course, emphasizing technology use, is designed to ready students for the 21-century workforce. We will be creating electric generators, using resistors and other circuit elements, analyzing load, and designing our own circuits to accomplish a specific task. We'll look at different forms of energy transmission -- electricity, sound, light (lasers), and heat.

With the electrical grid in need of major modernization to support the upcoming "smart" society, a knowledge of circuits and a high comfort level around electrical components will be invaluable in the job market.

Companies will be desperate to hire line workers on up through electrical power engineers and project managers. Students with a background understanding voltage, current, power, and switches will have a leg up on the next infrastructure overhaul. Your donation will help inspire the next generation of engineers and electricians.

The Circuit Scribe kits allow students to "draw" a wire on an ordinary piece of paper. Using magnetic circuit elements (included in the kit) they can create a working circuits that will do everything from lighting a lightbulb to creating paper-based remote controls to control a TV! They will learn about short circuits and open circuits, and the role of different elements. Using diodes and NPN transmitters they can learn about power amplification and conversion.
