Third grade classroom of economically disadvantaged children from diverse cultures and backgrounds are crazy about science!
I teach at a culturally diverse, high poverty area in California. 65% of the school’s population receives the free lunch program. The majority of my students are being raised by single parents or extended family members. Many of them have drug-addicted parents, parents in and out of jail, and extreme instability in their home lives. They look to school as a safe and reliable place to come every day, with firm routines and expectations, which is a juxtaposition to their chaotic home lives.
While our school has abundant reading and math resources, it sadly doesn’t have any science supplies. These 3rd grade students love science! Science gets them excited about the world around them and sparks their curiosity. Kids who are totally turned off to reading and math light up when it's time for science. They often ask me, "Can we do science every day?" Sadly, I don't have the financial resources to purchase the supplies we need for our classroom.
I am seeking funding to purchase science supplies and experiments from Lakeshore Learning. My students' genuine curiosity and excitement about science is amazing!
The supplies I've requested are measuring tapes, graduated cylinders, magnets, microscopes, petri dishes, tuning forks -- basically, an entire science starter kit. I have been able to demonstrate lessons in class but with no classroom sets, students aren't able to participate in the hands-on way that encourages true learning. For example, we created a vortex tube and a few students created them at home, but we didn't have the resources for all the students to create them together in class.
School is more than just learning to read, write and do arithmetic. The essence of true learning is the excitement of discovery. Please help me bring the magic and wonder of science to my wonderful 3rd grade students.
