My Students
Figure it out. That's the challenge I give my 6th-grade students every time we launch an investigation in science. It's hard to do this, though, unless you have the tools to collect data and make sense of it. We need a classroom set of calculators and stopwatches to help with our research.
Most of my students come from struggling families and neighborhoods.
They bring their enthusiasm for learning to the classroom, but not much else when it comes to school supplies. Our school is equally challenged this way. Teachers get next to nothing to start their class for the year, so I shop sales and search for donors such as yourselves who want to help out.
My Project
Think. Think. Think. That's what students have to do when they investigate the world around them, collecting data and then trying to interpret what it might mean. Calculators and stopwatches are essential tools for helping students do this. We would use them throughout the year in our research activities. My urban students are behind in their math skills when they reach my class, so I try to incorporate as much as I can into our activities. Students enjoy and value these tools, motivating them to improve their number skills.
"I can do this." That's what I hope to hear from students using calculators and stopwatches as they gather data for their science investigations.
My math strugglers will forget their reluctance with numbers and instead focus on being researchers and figuring things out.
