My Students
Do you remember what it was like when you had to solve every math problem by hand because calculators were not available? My seventh and eighth graders need calculators so they can finish their assessments in a timely manner.
I work in an urban school that consists primarily of low-income African American students.
Our school has not met Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) in over five years. Almost half the students within our school consist of Tier II, Tier III, and special education students.
My Project
I am requesting 15 calculators for my math class. Our resources are limited, and the students need calculators to use during assessments. When the students complete state assessments, we sometimes do not have enough calculators for every student. The 15 calculators for my classroom will ensure that my students will have calculators for their tests. If the students can use calculators on their assessments, they will be able to complete the assessments in a timely fashion, and they may be able to correctly answer questions they would miss otherwise.
Our students deserve every chance to succeed in school.
Our lack of resources should not be a factor when analyzing our students' progress throughout the year. Their access to calculators will allow them to perform better on classroom activities and assessments.
