Crayons for our Special Education Class

My students need a generous supply of crayons.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Banoff's classroom raised $242

This project is fully funded

Hi, I am the Special Education teacher in a first grade inclusion class. We are a Title I, early-childhood center. About eighty percent of the students receive free lunch, and approximately seventy-five percent of our students come from homes where a language other than English is spoken. My class consists of 14 students, 7 of whom, have been diagnosed with disabilities. Some of these disabilities include speech delays and emotional disorders. Most of these children have a lot of trouble expressing themselves through speaking alone. It is so important for these children to have many opportunities for creative expression. Allowing them to take part in activities such as painting and coloring lets them find other outlets for expressing their thoughts and feelings. Their art projects also act as great springboards for engaging these students in real conversation, something many of them currently have trouble with. When speaking about an art project, the students begin to display important language skills, such as topic maintenance. Although art and illustration is so important in early childhood, we have a very limited amount of crayons in our classroom. Also, many of my students don't even have crayons at home. A donation of crayons from Lakeshore Learning would create important artistic opportunities in our classroom and at home, as I will send a large amount of crayons to each family for homework and enrichment activities. I believe that all students deserve the benefits that come with artistic expression and your donation can create these necessary opportunities. Thank you.
