Crafty and Creative

Help me give my students yarn, needles, weaving looms, and "fabric" for our weaving and embroidery unit.

My Students

My students are leaders in their community. We are a Leader in Me school, where we all practice the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (really there are 8) every day to set goals, achieve them, and be successful citizens. We are also a magnet school for visual and performing arts, ensuring that all of our children receive arts-based instruction every day.

Most of our students are labeled as Title I and at-risk with a low socioeconomic status, and are minorities.

Basically, they don't get enough of most things that they desperately need. Lots of them have experienced too much failure and people who have let them down. But we don't let excuses get in our way!

My Project

This year in art for the 2nd - 5th graders, we are following along an art history timeline. Soon, we will be exploring traditional textile arts from many different cultures. I'd like to be able to offer the students a chance at making their own textiles inspired by traditions from around the globe.

These materials will be used for weaving and embroidery during our cultural textiles unit.

Both of these specific arts show up time and again across continents and through time. It doesn't hurt them to learn a little about stitching and sewing either, as it's still quite useful in our own modern times.
