Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Dragon Robotics 2375 is a extracurricular club, or a "team" as we would say, at Bioscience High School. Our small public high school is located in the downtown Phoenix area within the Phoenix Union High School District.

We have participated in FIRST Robotics for the past 10 years and have done science and technology outreach to students and the community just as long.

Our school has 305 students: 72% are Hispanic, 19% White, 6% Asian, 3% African American. At our school, 58% of students are on free- or reduced-lunch. Our team has similar ethnic demographics and is comprised of 40% female and 60% male.

Our team members have aspirations to go to college, universities and technical universities. Our robotics alumni have gone to major in engineering and computer science at Arizona State University, St. Mary's University (Texas) and Harvey Mudd. They love robotics because of the family it creates, the challenges it devises, and the resiliency it forges.

My Project

Beside gears, motors, belts, sensors, pneumatics, we build with aluminum, steel, wood and plastics to construct our robot. We have tools to cut metal and wood but tools to work with plastic are lacking.

We have been borrowing our mentor's Dremel for the past two years.

We need a new Dremel along with several mandrels, and plastic cutting wheels so we can customize our robot for this season and next season. Constructing a robot is a demanding task and the right tool makes the job easier.

However, our team is more than robots. We have a yearlong season that incorporates mentoring younger students in building Lego robots, hosting two robotics tournaments, volunteering at packing medical supplies and making marketing and business plans for the team. Our robotics program helps our students to reach their career aspirations and to build character.

We are asking for a little more help so building our robot is a little easier. Thank you.
