Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
A makerspace empowers middle school students to become better community members by fostering collaboration, empathy, and a sense of shared purpose. In this hands-on environment, students work together on creative projects, learning to communicate, listen, and solve problems as a team—skills that are essential for healthy communities. Many makerspace activities follow a design thinking process, which begins with understanding the needs of others. This approach helps students develop empathy and see how their ideas can improve the lives of those around them.
Beyond collaboration, makerspaces build confidence and a sense of ownership by allowing students to turn ideas into tangible creations.
Whether designing tools to help others, building items for local causes, or solving real-world challenges, students begin to see themselves as capable contributors. These experiences cultivate a growth mindset and a desire to give back—instilling values of service, innovation, and community pride that will last well beyond middle school.
